The White Salmon Enterprise, Hood River News and several local businesses and youth organizations co-sponsored a youth design contest in February 2002. The contest was open to youth between the ages of 5 and 18 living in the Bingen, Hood River, or White Salmon areas. Contestants were asked to submit a drawing of a new or improved bridge or tunnel across the Columbia River. Prizes were donated by Da Kine, Discover Bicycles, Hood River Outfitters, the Hood River Department of Parks and Recreation, McDonald's, Pietro's Pizza and Wal-Mart. Winning entries were displayed and awards presented at the February 28, 2002 Open House. Winners include:

Most Exciting and Thrilling Crossing: Chase Young, Gift from Hood River Aquatics Center
Strongest Bridge/Most Likely to Become an Engineer: Grant Young, Gift from Hood River Aquatics Center All participants also received a certificate good for a free hamburger at McDonalds in Bingen or Hood River.
