Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council

I-5 Bridge Trunnion Repair Project

Tri-Met Summary:
Traffic Management Measures

Beginning September 16, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will close the northbound lanes of the I-5 Interstate Bridge for vital repairs. The repair work - to replace a cracked trunnion, or shaft, on the northbound bridge - will cause all traffic to be diverted to the southbound bridge for three weeks. As bridge lanes are reduced to less than half, travelers between Portland and Vancouver can expect unavoidable backups and delays on highways and major streets around the region.

Reversible and Express Lanes will be in place to ease the pressures of morning and evening rush hours. The express lanes can be used by carpools of two or more people and buses.

I-5 Bridge - From midnight to noon there will be two southbound lanes (one of which will be an express lane) and one northbound lane. From noon to midnight there will be two northbound lanes (again, one will be an express lane) and one southbound lane.

I-205 Bridge - A northbound and southbound express lane will be designated on I-205.

I-5 Ramp Closures will occur at: SR-14/Washington Street southbound onto I-5; at Hayden Island and Marine Drive northbound onto I-5; and at Everett and Grand eastbound onto I-84.

Line 5 - Interstate Buses will operate on regular schedule. The northernmost end will begin and terminate at Kenton Park. Three shuttle routes denoted by red, green or blue will transport riders between Kenton Park, Jantzen Beach and Vancouver. Shuttles will travel in the designated carpool/bus lanes on I-5 and will run frequently to maximize transfer connections to and from Line 5. All shuttles will run the same hours that Line 5-Interstate operates, seven days a week.

The Red Shuttle will operate between the Vancouver Transit Center and Jantzen Beach.

The Blue Shuttle will operate between Kenton Park and Jantzen Beach.

The Green Shuttle will operate between Kenton Park and the Vancouver Transit Center.

Additional MAX Trains will be put on line weekdays, during peak rush hours to increase service frequency between Gateway Transit Center and downtown Portland. Trains are expected to depart every six minutes or less. Tri-Met personnel will be on site to help guide passengers to MAX and other bus routes.

Sandy Blvd. Limited Stop Service will run between the Parkrose Park & Ride and downtown Portland, with departures every 15 minutes during peak rush hours on weekdays. Stops will be made only at transfer points, bypassing the Hollywood Transit Center. (Transfer points are designated with a "T" on Tri-Met schedule maps.) The limited stop service will run on a published timetable and carry the "Line 12" name and number, along with the word "Limited."

Free Amtrak Commuter Rail Service will run weekdays between the Vancouver Amtrak station located on West 11th Street and Portland's Union Station on NW 6th Avenue. Amtrak riders will receive a Tri-Met transfer which will allow them to transfer to a Tri-Met bus or MAX train at no cost. The transfer will be valid for the entire day. Frequent bus service will provide direct access to and from the transit mall in downtown Portland.

    Departures from Vancouver to Portland - A.M. 5:30, 6:45, 8:00. P.M. 4:30, 5:45

    Departures from Portland to Vancouver - A.M. 6:00. 7:15 P.M. 4:00, 5:15, 6:30

Amtrak/Union Station Bus Service will increase. In addition to the 15+ bus lines which regularly serve Union Station, additional buses will be deployed to run from Union Station up the bus mall on SW 5th. Downtown boarding points to Union Station are designated by sign every two blocks on SW 6th. Tri-Met personnel will be at Union Station to answer questions and direct passengers to the nearest bus stop.

Carpool & Vanpool Services are available. Tri-Met provides free computerized carpool matching and special incentives for vanpools. For more information call 503-238-5833.

C-Tran is adding additional park and ride lots and will offer free bus service during construction. Riders originating in the Vancouver area will be given a Tri-Met transfer which will allow them to transfer to a Tri-Met bus or MAX train at no cost. The transfer will be valid for the entire day and can be used on Tri-Met for the return trip home.

Tri-Met "Trunnion" Tickets are available for businesses that will be affected by the I-5 bridge closure. Employers can take advantage of this special two-for-one ticket offer when ordering tickets for their employees in advance. Call 238-4926 for an order form.
