ODOT Press ReleaseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
Salem, Oregon -- The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced today that the closure of the northbound span of the Interstate Bridge scheduled to begin on September 16, will be reduced to 1 week, barring unforeseen delays due to weather or mechanical-related issues.
Project construction contractor, Christie Constructors, Inc. (Christie Constructors) has worked with ODOT engineers to design an innovative approach to repair the 81-year-old structure.
"We are extremely pleased that Christie Constructors has produced a method that will reduce the time of closure to the bridge," said Don Wagner, ODOT Region 1 Manager. "This is very good news for 119,000 commuters, businesses and the freight industry who are impacted by congestion caused by the project," he continued. Early completion of work will save travelers approximately $1 - $5 million per day due to delays caused by congestion.
Wagner also stated ODOT will continue to work with Christie on reducing the closure time further, if possible. ODOT will continue to give updates on any further changes to the schedule in order to allow businesses and commuters to be prepared.
The I-5 Bridge Project Team reminds motorists that traffic conditions are expected to be very congested during the closure of the northbound span. Amtrak rail service, special transit services and High Occupancy Vehicle lanes will continue to be offered during the closure.
"I want to re-emphasize how important it still is for commuters to take the traffic impacts from the project seriously," commented City of Vancouver Mayor, Royce Pollard. "Everyone needs to do their part to leave their cars at home, and utilize the transportation alternatives that are available during the closure," he added.
ODOT, The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the cities of Portland and Vancouver, C-TRAN, Tri-Met, Clark County, The S.W. Washington Regional Transportation Council and Metro will save an estimated $102,000 per day in operating costs associated with traffic management. This helps balance the $100,000 per day incentive bonus given to the contractor for each day the bridge is opened before 21 days.
Christie Constructors' repair proposal includes constructing the support structure for the 700-ton lift span counterweight during night hours prior to the closure. This allows the company to eliminate approximately 11 days of set up and break down originally planned to take place during the original 21-day closure. Project engineers caution there is still a risk of weather or mechanical-related delays which may impact the work schedule.
