ODOT Press ReleaseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
Portland, Oregon -- Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) officials have selected Christie Constructors of Richmond, California, as the contractor of choice to repair the Interstate Bridge between Portland and Vancouver. The project to replace a cracked axle-like steel structure, or trunnion, will require complete closure of the northbound bridge for 21 days sometime in September. The actual closure date will be determined in two weeks.
"ODOT is extremely impressed with Christie Constructors' experience, and ability to undertake such a technically challenging and time-sensitive project," said ODOT Project Manager Claude Sakr.
Christie Constructors' $2.87 million bid was one of five submitted from around the nation to repair the 80 year old bridge. Selection was based on both technical and cost proposals. The contract will be signed within two weeks.
The contract includes a $100,000 a day incentive clause to encourage the contractor to reduce the amount of time the bridge is closed; additionally, a $100,000 a day penalty can be levied if the closure exceeds the allotted 21 days.
The $2.87 million bid does not include engineering, additional traffic management expenses and other anticipated costs. Total cost of the project is expected to be around $6.5 million. Oregon owns and maintains the bridge, but Washington and Oregon have an agreement to share expenses 50-50.
An equally important part of the repair job is yet to come. A multi-agency Traffic Management Plan (TMP), designed to improve traffic conditions on I-5 as well as on the alternate routes, will be submitted in draft form later this month.
